Another great* idea for Erie! - Mercyhurst Fireworks
*Not so great.
I just saw this on GoErie:
Mercyhurst pays city, hands off fireworks
“Mercyhurst College will contribute $500,000 to the City of Erie, Mayor Joseph Sinnott and Mercyhurst President Tom Gamble announced this morning.
The Mercyhurst College Board of Trustees authorized the college to make the $500,000 contribution over a three-year period to help the city meet its fiscal needs.
The city and the college also announced that Mercyhurst’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration would move to a new venue on the bayfront. The city will organize the event and Mercyhurst will continue to be a major sponsor.
A portion of Mercyhurst’s unrestricted donation will be earmarked to fund the fireworks. This year, the fireworks will radiate from barges on the bay just offshore of the Pepsi Ampitheatre.“
Now notice the part I bolded. What other genius idea is taking place on the Bayfront right now? Major construction! (Don’t even get me started on that, the Bayfront wasn’t even that old, and it’s being redone? WTF!) I have no idea how they expect to deal with the parking and traffic on the Bayfront, especially with the construction going on. And next year, after the construction is done? Good luck getting out of there after the fireworks are done with only one lane on each side. You’re going to need at least 3 people directing traffic, and it won’t be pretty.
After a couple years of this, I suspect you’ll see people complaining about these very same things. However, it’ll be a long time until the City decides to widen the Bayfront to 2 lanes on a side (as it should have been initially), or to at least admit that they made a mistake in not doing so.
Jesus, I’m having a good day today and all I can post is rants about shit!
